Sewing II (2nd semester)

**Due to calendar and class size, Sewing I and Sewing II may be combined. Course Outline may be adjusted for current student/parent expectations. Sewing II is a two semester (full academic year) class. However, new students are welcome to join us mid-year. Contact Ms. Frizzo to determine which sewing class will best meet your student's needs/abilities. Please refer to the (LINK) syllabus for additional information.
Students must meet certain skill levels before advancing to the more difficult processes. Cutting accurately and the ability to make simple measurements are among the first skills that must be mastered. Proper hand sewing with a single thread, tailor's knot, straight and whip stitch seams must be mastered before machine work will commence. A sewing kit "housewife" will be constructed early which will hold all of the necessary tools. Simple skills will be used as pretest and reviewed regularly.
Textile use and fiber content evaluation and suitability to be covered. Students will work with simple cottons and linens at first, advancing to napped textiles, knits and leather goods as skill levels advance. Thread and other tools of the trade will be covered as applicable. Basic construction, edge finishes, layers/quilting, closures, historic fashion trends, alterations and modifications and pattern drafting are among the more advance work to be done by third and fourth level students.
Young men are encouraged to register. Projects will be adjusted to meet the unique interests of each student. Our goal is for all sewing students to acquire the basic skills needed to mend, assemble and create garments in a positive and enjoyable environment.
Some required supplies which should be brought to each session:
- Scissors (both fabric shears and small embroidery style scissors will be used). A quality pair of fabric or dressmaker shears is a very important investment.
- Thread, high quality (white, black, gray are very useful colors). Coats and Clark is a good, quality and inexpensive brand. Cheap thread is the cause of many expensive machine repairs and frustration for both the student and teacher.
- An assortment of hand sewing needles
- Seam ripper
- Dressmaker ball pins
- By Sewing II, a sewing machine should have been acquired. If a loaner is required please speak to Ms. Frizzo as the number of extra machines for use in class is limited.
Other supplies will be required as the student advances. This is not by any means a complete list and it is understood that supplies might be acquired gradually. We have some supplies and tools to lend. A fully stocked "housewife" is to be brought to every class.
Classes will be held every Thursday at 12:30 starting Jan 24, 2018 through May 16, 2018 except for the following dates:
Spring Break 4/2 - 4/6/2018.
Student will also be expected to attend and participate in the Student Demo / Public Open House on May 23 from 10 - 3 (parental supervision required). There will be a dinner for the participants held Thurs May 24 from 3 - 5.
